Furnaces, air conditioning and dry Colorado air
Longmont, Niwot, Erie and the towns around them. Measured on the first visit, written down, and priced before anything is taken apart.
Six calls we take most weeks
- No heat
The single most common winter call. Filters, flame sensors, pressure switches and ignition faults account for most of them, and all four are cheap compared with the damage from waiting.
- It keeps switching on and off
Short cycling. Bad for the equipment and always a symptom of something. The check narrows it before anybody visits.
- The upstairs will not cool
In a two-storey house on a single system this is nearly always duct and return sizing rather than capacity. It is measurable.
- The house is uncomfortably dry
Common at this elevation in winter. There are real answers and there are bad ones — we go through what humidification can and cannot do below.
- A new noise
Bearings, a cracked blower wheel, a loose panel or a flue that has moved. Worth a visit; noises do not resolve.
- It is old — what now?
We will tell you what it has left and what to budget, and put it in writing. We are not going to quote a replacement on the first visit as a reflex.
What humidification can and cannot fix
Winter air here is genuinely dry, and a whole-house humidifier does raise indoor humidity. What it will not do is fix a draughty house, and pushed too far it will put water on the inside of your windows and inside your walls.
We fit them, we service them, and we will tell you plainly where the sensible ceiling is for your house rather than turning it up until it feels nice in January.
- What we doFit and service bypass and steam humidifiers, set them against outdoor temperature, and check the drain and the water connection properly.
- What we check firstWhether the house is leaking air. Sealing usually does more for comfort than adding moisture does.
- What we will not claimHealth benefits. We are a heating contractor; how humidity affects you is a question for someone qualified to answer it.
Two things that do not go in the diary
- A carbon monoxide alarm soundingEverybody out of the house, then call 911 or the gas utility from outside. Not us first, and do not go back in to open windows.
- A smell of gasThe same answer. Leave the appliance alone, get out, and ring from outside.
We will come afterwards and find out what caused it. Everything else can be booked.
The number that settles most arguments
"The upstairs never cools" becomes a solvable problem the moment somebody measures what each register delivers. Almost always the answer is returns that are too small, a run that is too long, or leakage into an attic.
We measure before and after, so the work has a figure attached rather than a promise, and so you can see whether it was worth doing.
